Understanding How Germs Move Through a Grooming Facility

Items that have been washed and prepared for disinfection.

Disinfected Zone

Items that have completed the proper treatment and are ready for protected storage or use.

Disinfected tools should never be returned to the same container, towel, countertop, or area that held them before cleaning.

Color-coded containers, labeled work areas, and written procedures can make the system easier for employees to follow.

What to Do When a Pet Appears Ill

Employees should be trained to recognize and report possible signs of illness, infection, or parasites.

These may include:

  • Unusual coughing or sneezing

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Open wounds or unexplained sores

  • Inflamed or irritated skin

  • Discharge from the eyes, ears, or nose

  • Circular areas of hair loss

  • Fleas, ticks, or other parasites

  • Unusual lethargy or behavior

  • Strong or abnormal odors

A facility should have a written policy for separating the pet, notifying the owner, determining whether grooming should continue, and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting affected areas.

Groomers should not diagnose a medical condition. When appropriate, the pet parent should be advised to contact a veterinarian.
